On Thursday and Friday, after three days of rehearsals, we entered our 'recording studios' for the first time to do a 'dress rehearsal'. This Tuesday, we will be recording what is essentially the 'performance', after which we will hand over to those in charge of editing the individual recordings together. Jake, who has been working on the technical side of things, kindly offered to write a piece to share his own experiences of the journey so far.
Week one of strenuous tech testing began with a bang: trying to figure out how one edits sound. Rather more complex than the video editing some of us are more comfortable with, it turns out…
Two hours later and a whopping three minutes of dialogue was produced, edited, and ready to send off to the ‘stream’ (our new virtual drama classroom)! An unyielding experience at first but soon the recording, re-recording and editing things together became more intuitive and the finished result was wholeheartedly satisfying. The most prominent issue that was faced was creating an ‘at home recording studio’ - trust me, this is harder than it looks! Our brief was simple: it needs to be as insulated as possible! Therefore the natural conclusion was, of course, a duvet over your head. This is, however, stiflingly hot and makes breathing, talking, and reading a script an almighty challenge. Conclusions were soon come to that something more permanent, that gave us more space to breath, let alone voice act and record were a more preferable solution!
This is where my masterplan kicked in! I stealthily highjacked a spare room and erected my own recording tent! Made up of two duvets (one a lovely tartan pattern!), some towels, and pillows for comfort - this was much better and the sound sounded just as high quality as the under-the-bed solution.
It is great fun seeing everyone's unique and individual solutions to the problem: everything from under the stair cupboards to squat racks have been harnessed, modified and adapted to create this dampened space - my weekend project is to relocate my attempt of a recording studio to a large walk in wardrobe, hopefully increasing my comfort in the process!
